JAZZPAR Artists - Carsten Dahl

Carsten Dahl (DK), b. Oct. 3, 1967, was the Danish bandleader at the JAZZPAR 2000 Project. His Combo consisted of: Tony Coe (s, cl), Jörg Huke (tb), Carsten Dahl (p), Lars Danielsson (cel, b) and Aage Tanggaard (d).

Dahl is in the forefront of the new generation of Danish jazz musicians. The self-taught pianist is also a proficient percussionist and has been an associate professor at the Conservatory at Esbjerg prior to his base in Copenhagen. Dahl, being a hot name, has played with many of the gifted jazz musicians in Scandinavia and has already appeared as sideman on 16 CDs. Occasionally musicians like Andy Sheppard, Johnny Griffin, Ted Curson, Carmen Lundy and James Moody are accompanied by Dahl when they visit Scandinavian latitudes. Dahl has toured Europe, Mexico, South Africa and has also recently impressed the audience in Sweet Basil, New York, playing in bassist Mads Vinding's trio.
Everywhere listeners and reviewers praise the originality of the pianist's inspired and creative work. He unravels jazz standards intensively and earnestly and could easily follow the conventional path of a rising music star: tour the world with well-established jazz heavyweights. But Dahl is a family man and wants to develop his music based on Nordic roots. His third CD consists purely of piano playing, and though still highly improvised, the mix of classical colors and jazzy phrases could be labeled as third stream. For the JAZZPAR Event Dahl picked musicians who would give experience, dexterity and freshness to his Combo.
