JAZZPAR Artists - Lenny White |
Lenny White, b. 1949, performed with The Geri Allen Trio - Geri Allen (p), Palle Danielsson (b), Lenny White (d) - at The JAZZPAR Activities 1996. The American drummer has primarily made a place for himself in jazz history by virtue of his participation in Miles Davis' Bitches Brew from 1969. This powerful double album not only contains some of Davis' most fiery trumpet playing. With its fusion of jazz and rock it was a global breakthrough. But White has not only brought elements of rock into jazz drumming, but also Latin characteristics. And of course he is on home ground when the matter is straight jazz, i.e. bebop and varieties of that style. His playing has been characterized as daring and powerful. As a member of Prize Winner Geri Allen's trio, with its many-sided repertoire, he has however also revealed other and more subdued aspects of his skills. |
