JAZZPAR Artists - Misha Mengelberg

Misha Mengelberg (NL), b. June 5, 1935 in Kiev, Ukraine, was part of John Tchicai Quartet during The JAZZPAR Event 1992.

Mengelberg's father and granduncle were famous classical conductors. The young Misha studied piano and composition in Darmstad under John Cage a.o. and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He has been awarded several prizes including the Dutch National Jazz Prize 1966 and he is Founder of the Instant Composers' Pool, a nonprofit organization that sponsors Dutch avant-garde.
   Misha Mengelberg has worked with numerous musicians all over Europe. Well-known is his duo with Dutch drummer Han Bennink MEngelberg is heard on many recordings including Eric Dolphy's last album and has also performed at American festivals. He has frequently been involved in the combination of theater and music. Since 1968 he has often cooperated with John Tchicai. Cecil Taylor and Thelonious Monk are considered MEngelberg's main influences. For many years one of the strongest European voices within the so-called free music.
